Golf Rules and Terminologies
All of us are bounded by rules. In traffic, we have the traffic rules which are implemented strictly. Any violation will be dealt with accordingly. The rules are not there for nothing. It is a guide not just to be followed but to be understood. Knowing why these rules exist, make you know the limits of your actions aw well as others.
As well as any other sport, golf has its own rules and regulations. These golf rules must be followed and understood by the players and caddies. Everyone who sets foot in the green must know the right etiquette in this sport. It is their responsibility to know and understand it. It is one way of respecting your fellow golfers and the sport itself.
Now, if you are still beginning to learn golf, do not worry, there are a lot of golfers out there who are also willing to help you out. If you are hesitant to approach them, do not worry, I will set it out for you. However, not everything will be discussed here, just the basic things you should know about the sport.
Unlike any other sport, if you will observe properly, there are no referees that will watch a player’s every move. The game will depend on the players playing the game. This makes golf a sport where a player’s discipline and sportsmanship is essential.
You must wear the necessary clothes when playing the sport. Golf courses have different dress codes. You may check it out beforehand. It is important that you should put an identifying mark on your golf balls as you will never know if your competitors will be using the same brand of golf balls you will be using. Make sure that you are not using more than 14 clubs. The maximum allowed number of clubs is 14. On the teeing ground, you must position your ball between markers. “Play it as it lies” is the basic principle of golf. You are not allowed to pick up or move the ball unless you know that it is allowed under the rule book. There are certain situations where you are allowed to move or pick up the golf ball.
The penalty for Out of bounds and lost balls is stroke-plus-distance. It means that if you hit a ball out of bounds or if your ball goes into the deep woods and unable to find it, add one stroke to your score then go back to where you had your last shot was then hit the ball again. For water hazards, take a one stroke penalty and then drop a ball at any point behind where the ball crossed the water hazard but on the line of play.
It is also important to be aware of your pace. Be ready for your turn. Don’t wait for your turn to come up to choose what golf club to use. It is important not to keep others waiting for you. In a golf course, there are always a group of players who has a faster pace than others. It is a good etiquette to let the faster group to play through.
It is the responsibility of the player to also take care of the golf course. Before leaving a bunker, a player must smoothen up the footprints made if there is a rake then you should use it. Players should also repair divots whenever they are damaged. Players should also prevent unnecessary damage to the golf course.
To learn golf, you must also learn the terminologies in golf. We’ll tackle some of these terminologies and briefly explain each one.
Abnormal Golf Conditions is a casual water or hole caused by a burrowing animal, reptile or bird. Approach shot is a shot that you aim your golf ball to land on the green.
Back nine is the last 9 holes in an 18-hole golf course. A ball in play is a play of the player from the teeing ground up to the point where the ball is in the hole. A baseball grip is a when all ten of your fingers are on the grip. A Birdie is when your play is one par less for the specific hole. A Bunker is a hazard area filled with sand. A caddie is a paid individual to carry your equipments on the golf course. They are also available to give out advices. Casual water is a puddle of water resulting from rain. Course rating refers to the rating of the course depending on its difficulty, the higher the rating, the higher the difficulty. An eagle is when your play is two pars less than the specified par of the hole.
The green is an area where the hole is situated. A hazard is a water or sand that is part of the golf course to challenge the players. A tee is a golf equipment designed to raise the ball from the ground.
Being able to learn how to play golf is important but what is more important is not only to know and understand the rules of golf but by implementing them.
