The Calgary Flames play hockey in Calgary, Alberta. This team is the third pro hockey team that Calgary has had. The Calgary Tigers and Cowboys were the other teams to be in the town. The Flames and the Edmonton Oilers are in the province of Alberta. The two teams are close to one another, so it is obvious that they are rivals. The rivalry is known simply as the Battle of Alberta. Like many rivalries, these games are highly contested. The Flames play in the Pengrowth Saddledome. In 1986, the Flames competed for the Stanley Cup. The city was so excited. They hadn’t seen anything like that since the 1924 team. There was a lot of Calgary Flames merchandise everywhere.
The Colorado Avalanche plays in Denver. They won the Stanley Cup in 1996, as well as in 2001. The franchise was founded in Quebec before moving to Denver. The Avalanche is the only team to have won a championship after relocating the previous year. It came as a surprise because nobody expected them to do so. The people became fans after the team moved to Denver, and became bigger ones after the new team won a championship. There was Colorado Avalanche merchandise everywhere.
The Edmonton Oilers play in Edmonton, Alberta, which is in Canada. The Oilers were founded in 1971 as a member of the World Hockey Association.
Edmonton fans were unable to get into the packed Rexall Place during their 2006 playoff run. Those fans that didn’t get into the games celebrated just as loud as those who bought tickets. Edmonton Oilers merchandise like banners was everywhere.
The Minnesota Wild is based in St. Paul, MN. The Wild are one of the newest NHL teams, starting play back in the 2000 season. The Xcel Energy Center has seen a sell-out for every home game since the Wild’s beginning.
The Minnesota North Stars left the Twin Cities after the 1993 season was over. The Twin Cities got the news in ‘97 that they would get a new franchise starting in the 2000 season. There fans were estatic and had a lot of Minnesota Wild merchandise celebrating the new accomplishment.
The Vancouver Canucks play ice hockey in Vancouver, British Columbia. They play all their home games in the General Motors Place, which seats about 18,600. The team has made it to the Finals twice, but lost to the Islanders back in 1982 as well as the other NY team (the Rangers) in 1994. Even though the Canucks were Cinderella teams both years, their fans were nothing short of amazing. They all came to the game chanting like they knew they were going to win. They also had a lot of different Vancouver Canucks merchandise. Unfortunately for them, it didn’t happen that way.
